Client Centred Learning Training for ADI’s

About Client Centred Learning

Instruction has changed a great deal in recent years, recognising that the client needs to be placed at the very centre of the learning to drive process  is now regarded as essential for good instruction.

Client Centred Learning (CCL) is the term adopted by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) to describe the educational approach they wish Approved Driving Instructors (ADI) to use when delivering driver education and is part of the ADI national standards check (The standards check replaced the old ADI check test on 7 April 2014).

CCL is not a single theory, but it draws on a range of educational theories allowing the ADI to take into account how the learner prefers to learn; recognising the ways in which different people retain information and develop their skills.

DVSA latest analysis has shown the top 5 areas where instructors fail to demonstrate competence are where they haven’t:

  • adapted the lesson plan, when appropriate, to help the pupil work towards their learning goals
  • taught the lesson in a style suited to the pupil’s learning style and current ability
  • encouraged the pupil to analyses problems and take responsibility for their learning
  • given the pupil appropriate and timely feedback during the session
  • given enough feedback to help the pupil understand any potentially safety-critical incidents

Who is the course suitable for?

All ADI’s, or anyone training to become an ADI, who wants to develop their understanding of Client Centred Learning which is part of the DVSA ADI National Standards Check and how they will be assessed

Why should you take the course?

  • Prepare for your check test and increase your potential to achieve Grade A
  • Achieve and promote your Higher Standards check grade to new clients
  • Continual profession development opportunity
  • Become a ‘Recommended’ ADI and the potential access to further work

“The CCL training course, made me think deeper and harder, about what I was in part already doing. It made me tap into existing experiences, and helped me broaden my understanding to concepts, as well as provide useful training tools to experiment with. Learning comes from within, so I needed to have an “open mind” to the process to make it work effectively – delighted I did – happy Grade A ADI”.  Nick Dunn
