Detroit Motor Show: A-Z

The North American International Auto Show takes place in Detroit, MI. The Detroit Motor Show is always the first motor show in the car industry’s calendar. Press days start from 11 January and it opens to the public from Saturday 16 January through to Sunday 24 January 2016

This year has seen an array of cars on display:

Audi H-Tron Quattro concept

A hydrogen version of the E-Tron Quattro Concept benefits from a powertrain with both fuel call and a lithium-ion battery for an extra boost. The hydrogen system alone can produce 148 horsepower. There are three tanks to carry the fuel which are located under the passenger compartment. The battery can also provide enough energy for an extra 134 hp for short periods.

Apart from the yellow paint, the H-Tron looks very similar to the E-Tron Quattro. Both are based on the second generation modular longitudinal platform. The concept is especially flexible. For example, bot cars use a virtually identical floor assembly despite their different technology.  The two vehicles are twins on the inside as they both feature Audi’s latest cockpit with OLED screens. .

Audi A4 Allroad

The Audi 2017 line up continues to grow with the A4 Allroad. It has an additional 1.3 inches of ground clearance compared to the normal A4. The new Allroad features a thick vertically-oriented slatted grille while grey plastic cladding is used for the wheel well edges, rocker panels and lower bumpers.

The Allroad will be available with a petrol or diesel engine and will launch in Europe in the summer.

The M2 is due to go onsale in April priced from £44,070.

BMW X4 M40i

BMW X4 M40i

The BMW X4 M40i sits at the top of the BMW X4 line up and will go on sale in the UK in the first quarter of 2016.

Power comes from a newly developed M Performance TwinPower Turbo six-cylinder in-line petrol engine. The three-litre unit produces 355bhp between 5800-6000rpm and generates peak torque of 343lb ft. The BMW X4 M40i covers the 0-62mph sprint in 4.9sec and can achieve a restricted top speed of 155mph.

Infiniti Q60

The new Infiniti Q60 is a premium sports coupe that combines expressive design with exhilarating performance and dynamics.

The high performance 3.0-liter V6 twin-turbo engine from the new and exclusive “VR” powertrain family is born out of the brand’s extensive in-house experience of six-cylinder powertrain development. The new engine has been engineered to empower the driver and offer increased power and torque with high levels of efficiency. This new “VR30” engine comes in two power ratings: 300 horsepower or 400 horsepower, with the latter offering one of the best power-to-efficiency ratios in the premium sports coupe class.

A four-cylinder 2.0-liter petrol engine, turbocharged to produce 208 horsepower, is also available in the Q60.

The Q60 will go on sale in the late summer 2016

Kia Telluride concept

Kia have revealed their seven-seater SUV concept at the Detroit motor show. Kia have descrived the model as a ‘luxury’ vehicle that would be ‘positioned above’ the Kia Sorrento crossover. It is taller, wider and longer than the Sorrento. “The Kia Telluride makes an aesthetic statement for the Kia brand as a bold, all-new luxury SUV with an abundance of advanced technology, focusing particular attention on the experience and comfort of second-row occupants,” said Tom Kearns, chief designer of Kia Design Center America, in a statement.

Kia like its sister brand, Hyundai are trying to expand its mainstream appeal to reach a wide range of buyers, including shoppers who would naturally trend towards luxury brands.

Lexus LC500

This is the production version of the LF-LC concept car. There was originally no production intentions for the LF-LC concept, but buoyed by public support, “we listened, and we made it real” explains CEO Akio Toyoda.

It is a bold designed luxury 2+2, with the familiar Lexus spindle grille which is described as “an athletic, aerodynamic shape with sensual curves”. The car has a 5.0-litre V8 engine as used in the RC F and GS F mated with a 10-speed automatic. It is predicted to do 0-62 in less than 4.5 seconds,

Mercedes E-Class

The 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class, the 10th generation of the Mercedes sedan has adopted the ‘S-Class exterior aesthetic and emphasis on interior material quality. The E-Class has a similar shaped grille and headlights and the rear lights go with the style of the S-Class too.

The E-Class interior displays the new dual-screen infortainment cluster and has plenty of metal accents and wood trim. A new, optionally available AIR BODY CONTROL air suspension ensures outstanding ride comfort and driving dynamics. There is a choice of 64 different colours to light the interior.

“The E-Class is the core of the Mercedes-Benz brand and in the past has repeatedly redefined the standards in the business-class segment. Now it carries this tradition into the future with a wealth of top-class innovations. The new E-Class takes another major step towards fully autonomous driving. In addition, it enhances efficiency, safety and comfort, reduces the stress level when driving and intensifies driving pleasure,” says Prof. Dr. Thomas Weber, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development.

S 65 AMG Cabriolet

The S65 Cabriolet like the S65 Coupe will receive the upgraded twin turbocharged 5.5-litre V12. Despite carrying an extra 175kg brought on by the added bracing incorporated within its platform, Mercedes-AMG says the 2180kg S65 Cabriolet boasts the same 0-62mph time as the 2035kg S65 Coupé at 4.1sec. Top speed for the new AMG model is nominally limited to 155mph, although buyers can choose to raise it to 186mph with an optional Driver’s Package that includes uprated tyres.

Pricing for the S65 Cabriolet is yet to be announced, although with the S65 Coupé already pitched at £183,075, it is expected to nudge the £200,000 mark when sales get under way.

Mercedes-Benz SLC

The Mercedes-Benz SLC is a 4-cylinder or V-6 engine and it accelerates from 0-60mph in 5.7 seconds. Where as the 3.0-litre, V-6 biturbo engine will manage 0-60mph in 4.6 seconds. It replaces the SLK and sits under the SL.

A seven inch screen allows access to sat-nav, bluetooth, USB and iPod connectivity, internet radio and DVD player.

Porsche 911 Turbo & Turbo S

Porsche 911

For 2017, even the base 911 Carrera uses turbocharging to maximize both power and fuel-efficiency from its 3.0-liter flat-six engine, but doesn’t tout that hardware in its name. The venerable Turbo badge is reserved for the new Turbo and Turbo S using a larger displacement 3.8-liter engine to generate 540 and 580 horsepower respectively. The S, Porsche claims, can get to 60 mph in under 3.0-seconds, making it the first 911 to manage that feat.

Volvo S90

Volvo S 90

The 2017 S90 is the first new model to be released in the US after the XC90 took them by storm after approximately 88,000 pre-orders received last year. Volvo are hoping to rival the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and the BMW 5-series with a concave grille and T-shaped lights.

Standard equipment includes the semi-autonomous drive Pilot Assist and the IntelliSafe Assist, which includes the Adaptive Cruise Control and Distance Alert. The large animal detection is, well, self explanatory and is claimed to offer “intuitive warning and brake support”.

Volkswagen Tiguan GTE Active Concept

This is an off-road version of the all-new Tiguan with VW claiming the “off-road design elements are feasible as options for production cars.”

The GTE Active Concept has been fitted with the brand’s next generation infotainment system. This is made up of a 9.2 inch touchscreen and uses gesture control technology.

The concept has been raised by 45mm over the normal model to accommodate the big off-road tyres, with ground clearance up to 225mm. Approach and departure angles have improved for tackling tough terrain, while underbody protection finished in matt aluminum has been added to the front and rear bumpers for more protection.
