You can now add seat belts to the list of counterfeit items you should be looking out for when shopping for you car.
Carmarthenshire Trading Standards have uncovered counterfeit harnesses bearing the Sabelt, Sparco and Takata brand names for sale on Ebay and Facebook by a Carmarthenshire trader. The team has released a video showing the harness failing at 50mph.
There are no safety issues with genuine Sparco, Sabelt and Takata harnesses and Trading Standards are encouraging customers to purchase seat belts from authorised stockists only.
Cllr Jim Jones, Carmarthenshire County Council’s Executive Board Member for Public Protection, said: “We are very concerned about these counterfeit products. Not only are they cheaply made fakes, but they could be potentially fatal.
“We are pleased to be working with the official manufacturers of the Sabelt, Sparco and Takata harnesses to help customers identify whether they have bought a genuine product or an imported fake.”
